CONTROL 235

Control 235 is Gavin JR's most recent work which was on display at Friar Gate Studios as part of a group exhibition ‘ Incubations’. (http://www.visualartist-incubation.com/)

‘Control 235’ is an exploration into the craft and art of singing as well as an attempt to explain in the artists own conflicts between his logical and creative mind. Taking a broad idea of identity and searching for a perfection, (which has been shown in previous projects) and combining it with his ability to perform and sing. Gavin JR knows all to well through his vocal coaching lessons that singing is actually a very technical process, and singing correctly requires numerous elements, such as physical posture, breathing and even diet.

The ability to use the voice as an instrument is more of a craft than an art form. It is only when a song is performed, be it on stage or in front of a camera that it becomes more believable and creative. The power of stagecraft! of stagecraft

‘235’ - the amount of seconds (on this occasion) for the artists creativeness to surpass his controlled logical self.

Showing the power that music and the arts can have on an individual.

Mental conflicts between the logical and the creative mind - something that affects us all. Imagination and dreaming is something that is unexplainable and unique to each and everyone of us.

The artwork demands visual attention, and the silence allows the viewer to concentrate on the visuals. Unlike most music videos we see, we are stripped of the uncontrollable logical links between the moving image and the words being spoken.

‘Control 235‘ is on show at Friar Gate Studios—Derby.
3rd—8th June 2009.

Mr Fox - A True British Native

Mr Fox – A True British Native Gavin J Rogers (2009)

On Show at Derby Museum and Art Gallery 9th-22nd June 2009.

Meet the foxes...

The Red Fox is the only member of the dog family who is native to the British Isles. For centuries they have had to adapt their existence as a result of mankind’s evolution to the modern world.

The relationship between man and fox has always been a stormy one – with foxes being hunted for food, fur, pest control and even for sport. From young we are taught through many children’s stories that the fox is a sly, cunning character always up to no good. In fact, the fox is a very intelligent, resourceful and adaptable mammal.

In Britain the native red fox species hasn’t changed much over the past 2000 years, and has managed to maintain a steady population. In contrast the progression of humans has been exponential. Man has learnt to ‘invent and explore their way’ to the modern world as we know it.

In truth, the human population has progressed so much, that now man has become ‘reliant on their own inventions’ – slowly wiping out the natural template of ‘the survival of the fittest’. Now in the human population the weak are also surviving and with the help of advancing technologies and medicine, genetic disorders and disease are being passed on to future generations.

Be it: an ironic mockery of British history/evolution, the fox’s view of mankind, or a humorous celebration of our great British red fox…

…Who is undoubtedly the ‘True British Native’…?.

STEREOTYPES - 2009

Bringing together film, sound, acting and installation by Gavin J Rogers.

The subject of the work being self portraiture in combination with ones and societies bewildering obsession with having to stereotype people and social groups.

The core of the work is four short films - each depicting the lives of four different stereotyped individuals. The films are compete solo works, with the artist acting the characters and directing the films right through to production.

The installation shows the films (and associated sounds) being played , alongside the clothing of the absent 'character'.

NEW YORK 'STUDY' TRIP

Wow, what a city, far to much to see in such a short space of time. Very, busy, lively, cosmopolitan place and a real eye opener for me and my work, also managed to meet up with a local artist, Janet Biggs, which was very useful and inspiring.

What a great trip! and spent it with a lovely bunch of fellow students :). Explored Manhatten from top to bottom, and saw lots of art and people on the way.
